NetWare NFSのモード1および2は、Unixの「読み取り専用」フラグをファイルの所有権をrootに変更することで実装しています。これにより、ローカルユーザーはsetuidプログラムを作成し、それを「読み取り専用」に設定することでroot権限を取得できます。NetWare NFSはこれらのプログラムをsetuid rootプログラムに変更します。
